Young programmers will develop mobile social services for «Pyaterochka»

At the end of February, five projects were presented as finalists in a contest of mobile social service concepts aimed at supporting a healthy lifestyle and good nutrition, environmental protection and care for local communities among students of the Samsung IT School.

«Pyatyorochka» retail group was a partner of this contest. All students of Samsung IT School 2022/23 from different regions of Russia could take part in it. To do so, it was necessary to describe an idea for an application and its use cases. Experts from «Pyatyorochka» and SamsungThe evaluated the works of contest participants. The criteria included social usefulness, scalability, expected coverage of users, the expected effect from the project implementation, conformity with the customer’s project activities, and compliance with the project implementation deadlines.

The finalists of the project contest were: the project «KIDS&TEENS» with the list of products and safe route to «Pyatoyrochka» for children, «EAT FOREVER! — a food-sharing app with the ability to transfer usable products to those in need, «StudyFor5», an app for creating motivation to learn by earning points from the retail network that can be spent on favorite products, and the «Health&Nutrition», which allows users to monitor their nutrition, get recipes for healthy meals, make personal meal plans, and compete with other users.

Between February and May 2023, each of the finalist projects will undergo a series of mentoring meetings to help students refine their project ideas into full-fledged apps by the end of the school year. Subsequently, these apps have a chance to be developed within the retail group.

«Such contests are important for two reasons. First, they allow finding creative ways to solve urgent social problems. Second, they help the students of Samsung IT School to get professional experience in creating applications while working with the customer. Mentor support from experts of the rapidly developing company will help young developers realize their own daring ideas and make the world a better place,» commented Sergey Pevnev, vice president of the Samsung Electronics CIS headquarters.

«We are interested in projects that involve young people. Young developers have a different perspective on many processes. They understand better than anyone else the needs of young audiences, some barriers and ideas for overcoming them. And this is especially important when it comes to important social aspects. All the projects presented in the contest were really worthy and valuable. We will provide full support to the finalists so that they can refine their projects and present applications that are already functioning,» said Alina Yukhnevich, head of Community Care at «Pyatyorochka».

«Samsung IT School» is a federal social and educational program to train future IT specialists, which is part of Samsung Innovation Campus global initiative. The program started in 2014 and is focused on acquisition of theoretical and practical skills in programming by schoolchildren of 9-10 grades who have an inclination for algorithmic thinking, are keen on technologies and have stable knowledge of school computer science and mathematics. Students of the program master the development of mobile applications from idea to distribution in Java for Android. Students chose their future profession and realize themselves in information technologies, a key area of the country’s economic development.

Every year more than 1,000 students from over 50 cities in Russia get the opportunity to study mobile development. For the 2022/2023 academic year, Samsung IT School opened several additional groups with online learning. Thanks to this, schoolchildren from regions where it is not possible to attend classes in person can take a training course online.
