THE FUTURE OF TECHNOLOGIES WAS DISCUSSED AT SAMSUNG AI FORUM

Moscow, November 27, 2018 — Samsung Electronics held the first Samsung Artificial Intelligence Forum in Russia. At the event, which took place at Samsung AI Center — Moscow (SAIC-Moscow), first results of the research conducted in the Center were presented. In the future the projects introduced at the event will be used in launching full-fledged services related to AI and machine learning, as well as to developments in the field of software and hardware for the company’s products.

At the Forum the guests listened to the report “Drawing humans with Neural Networks”, made by SAIC-Moscow VLT (Vision, Learning, Telepresence) Group under the leadership of Prof. Victor Lempitsky, who was recently included in the Elsevier`s list of the most cited Russian scientists. Sergey Nikolenko, the Head of multidimensional data analysis laboratory of the Center, spoke about developments in the field of multimodal embeddings in different domains. Prof. Dmitry Vetrov, the Head of Machine Learning laboratory of SAIC-Moscow, made a presentation on implicit probabilistic methods. Anton Konushin, the Head of the Computer Vision and Visual Modeling laboratory at SAIC-Moscow, shared his vision on robotic navigation from a deep learning prospective. The list of speakers on the event also included: Alexey Nevidomsky, the Head of Applied AI team at Samsung R&D Institute in Russia with his report “Distributed Learning and the age of smarter devices”; Ivan Oseledets, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech), with the talk on the problems of Deep Learning; Anton Slesarev, one of the project managers on engineering at Yandex Autonomous driving division, delivered a presentation titled “How We Launched the First Robotaxi in Europe”; Dmitry Kropotov, the researcher at the joint laboratory of Samsung with the Higher School of Economics and  Lomonosov Moscow State University, gave a talk on optimization and sampling in neural network models.

“Nowadays artificial intelligence is one of the core activities of Samsung Electronics, allowing the company to build technologies that can change the lives of the users for the better. Since the opening of the first Samsung Artificial Intelligence Center, we have not ceased to expand the geographical presence of the project. Today there are 7 global centers operating around the world, and SAIC-Moscow, which is the best in performance results, plays an exceptionally important part. I would like to emphasize the high professionalism of Russian specialists and the great potential of the research conducted by them. Together we are moving towards the achievement of our global goal – implementation of Artificial Intelligence in all Samsung products and services by 2020”, said Jin Wook Lee, Samsung R&D Institute Russia General Director.

“The specialists at Samsung AI Center - Moscow work extensively on development of telepresence technologies. Of course, the majority of people still perceive such advances as something futuristic, but I am sure that in future these technologies will successfully integrate into our daily lives”, – commented Victor Lempitsky, the Head of  VLT Group (Vision, Learning, Telepresence) of SAIC-Moscow.

“The Laboratory of Computer Vision and Visual Modeling at Samsung AI Center in Moscow is engaged in development and implementation of artificial intelligence in various areas, including our everyday life. It is planned that in the foreseeable future, robots will not be limited to familiar functions, such as cleaning, but will be able to become multifunctional assistants around the house. The greatest difficulty in development of such home-care robot is enabling him to correctly map a room and move, because in order to do it he needs to solve several computer vision tasks at once. Methods of machine learning are designed to help the robot in navigating and map building, therefore at the moment the selection of such methods and their implementation are one of our top priorities”, – commented prof. Anton Konushin, Head of the Computer Vision and Visual Modeling Laboratory at SAIC-Moscow.

“Machine learning technologies are a truly innovative area of research, they can make our lives easier and more convenient. However, the question of how to extract the maximum practical effect from such algorithms still remains open. An important area of the research is the adaptation of AI algorithms for mobile devices, because today the application of specialized processors speeding up the work of machine learning algorithms make the computing power of mobile devices quite comparable to the power of a computer in a number of tasks . Russian specialists are actively engaged in research in this area”,  said Alexey Nevidomsky, the Head of Applied AI team at Samsung R&D Institute in Russia

SAIC-Moscow was opened on May 29, 2018. It added to the portfolio of Samsung Research division and became the fifth specialized Center for Samsung`s research in the field of AI in the world. The center will help the company to strengthen its leadership in the field of machine learning and data analysis, and explore the wide capabilities of user-oriented AI. The main areas of the study include computer vision and basic algorithms for the artificial intelligence platform. Seven Samsung Artificial Intelligence Centers operate under the leadership of the company today: in Seoul, Silicon Valley, New York, Cambridge, Moscow, Toronto and Montreal.

Apart from SAIC-Moscow, research is being conducted in joint laboratories of Samsung and leading Russian universities. At the moment, such joint laboratories of artificial intelligence are launched at Moscow State University, HSE and PDMI RAS. Moreover, Samsung is implementing technological projects in collaboration with universities in many cities of Russia, including Kazan, Samara, Rostov-on-Don, Tomsk, Novosibirsk

SAIC-Moscow has become the basis for promoting the company’s educational initiatives. Consequently, the first AI Bootcamp summer school was held within the AI Center in summer 2018. In addition, the Center hosted presentations of the best projects by “Samsung IT SCHOOL” graduates  and “Samsung  IoT  Academy” of the academic year 2017-2018.

Details about the Samsung Research and Global AI Centers are available at Samsung Research.
