Samsung announced the winners of the IT Academy Interuniversity Student Project Contest

Samsung Electronics summed up the results of the 5-th annual inter-university contest among graduates of the Samsung IT Academy social and educational project. As a result of the selection, 13 student projects from 5 Russian cities were made to the final. Students from MPEI, MEPHI, Sechenov University, RTU MIREA, (Moscow), ISU, INRTU (Irkutsk), NArFU (Arkhangelsk), UrFU (Yekaterinburg) and SFedU (Rostov-on-Don) are the finalists.

This year, the jury evaluated all the projects together and distinguished the prize winners. In addition to main nominations and «Spectators’ choice», awards were also held in the nominations «Samsung choice», «Mentor of the Year», «Teacher of the Year» and «University of the Year».

Contest winners:

1st place: «Detection of kidney cancer cells». Author: Zemerov Arseny, Sechenov University. Teacher: Dmitry Kirillovich Valetov. The aim of the project is to help pathologists diagnose kidney cancer. The application identifies and highlights problem areas on histological slides, classifying 4 types of cell lesions using neuronetworks.

2nd place: «Acoustic engine research». Authors: Levin Yonatan, Kravchuk Danil, Voloshin Nikita, INRTU (Irkutsk). Teacher: Roman Vladimirovich Kononenko. The project is a hardware solution that allows to read vibrations of the electric motor, preprocess and transfer them to the center for further processing. This is necessary for prediction of an engine life.

3rd place and «Spectators’ choice» nomination: project «Tissue electrostimulator». Authors: Golubeva Elizaveta, Dergachev Andrey, MPEI. Teacher: Krutskikh Vladislav Viktorovich. The team developed educational laboratory device that provides electric pulses of certain parameters to the preparation (e.g. frog tissue). The device is designed for students’ training and is equipped with a mobile application to control parameters from a smartphone.

The winner of Samsung special nomination was the «Smart Energy Meter», author: Kaplinski Andrey, MPEI. Teacher: Nikolay Olegovich Strelkov. The device allows to read the signal from the electric meter via optical and wired interface. It connects to the Internet through WiFi and integrates into the Samsung SmartThings, which allows you to implement various custom scenarios, such as notification on the smartphone about changing the tariff from day to night or excessive power consumption.

Mironov Anton from RTU MIREA became the Teacher of the Year. He has been the IoT teacher since the beginning of the project in 2017. Every year he prepares graduates who qualify for the finals of the project contest.

NArFU became the University of the Year. This university implements two IT Academy tracks: Artificial Intelligence and Mobile Development. Its graduates consistently reach the final, and the graduates number is among the most significant in the IT Academy.

The jury of the contest in 2022 included representatives of the Samsung R&D Institute Russia (SRR), the Samsung Electronics CIS headquarters, Rightech, Yandex, Kaspersky, Institute for System Programming of the RAS, DeepPavlov.ai, MIPT, and Interuniversity Program on Technological Entrepreneurship. Chairman of the jury was Vladimir Paramonov, who is the head of the Applied Hardware Solutions Team in SRR.

The event was held online with a broadcast on the Samsung IT Academy YouTube channel. After defending the projects and before the award ceremony Ilya Bykonya, who is CEO of Rightech and the jury member, held a lecture about future business models in the projection of IoT.

«The Samsung IT Academy project started in Russia in 2017 and this year the program turned 5 years. Over the past five years, more than 75,000 students have participated in our project offline and online. Only in 2021/2022 academic year about 500 students from 26 universities became graduates of the program on three tracks: mobile development, Internet of things, and artificial intelligence. Over the years, we have witnessed the translation of a large number of bright ideas into individual practical projects and work that successfully solve urgent tasks in both the industry and social sphere.  I wish all the graduates further success in their professional activities», — said in his welcoming speech Sergey Pevnev, who is the vice-president of the Samsung Electronics CIS headquarters.

Samsung IT Academy is a long-term free social and educational program of Samsung Electronics. The project was launched in 2017. It is aimed at training high-class specialists in the most popular fields of IT: artificial intelligence, Internet of things and mobile development.

Developed by specialists of Samsung R&D Institute Russia, the learning tracks of Samsung IT Academy are built on the development of demanded practical skills during the project activities. By the end of the academic year the graduates of Samsung IT Academy develop individual projects and in case of successful completion of the program receive a certificate from Samsung.

Samsung IT School and Samsung IT Academy are part of the Samsung Innovation Campus ecosystem. It is a global social and educational program aimed at developing and supporting young talents in IT technologies. Russia was the first country to launch the program presented by these two projects. Samsung IT School helps schoolchildren to acquire practical knowledge and skills in the mobile application development on Java for Android, and Samsung IT Academy focus on the development of IT competence centers in Russian universities and IT-student education.

In December 2021 Samsung Innovation Campus became the laureate in the nomination «Education and Personnel» of the Runet Award 2021. Earlier Samsung Innovation Campus was awarded the first place in the «Leaders of the Future» nomination of the All-Russian contest of best practices in the socio-humanitarian sphere «Creating the Future», and the educational program Samsung IT Academy was awarded in «Best social projects of Russia» nomination.
