The annual Samsung Open Source Conference 2021 will be held in Russia for the first time

Samsung Electronics will hold the international Samsung Open Source Conference Russia 2021 (SOSCON Russia 2021) on September 15, 2021. This is a large-scale annual event for Open Source developers, held by Samsung Research since 2014. This year, for the first time, the conference will take place not only in Seoul, but also in Russia with the support of Samsung R&D Institute Russia.

The event will take place online from 10:00 to 19:00 Moscow time. Pre-registration is required on the SOSCON Russia 2021 website.

Samsung Open Source Conference Russia 2021 will become a place for presenting the Russian Open Source community at the international level, introducing Samsung open projects, exchanging experiences and expanding international cooperation between developers. To achieve these goals and make the conference most accessible to a wide audience, it will be broadcasted simultaneously in three languages: Russian, English, and Korean. The conference will be moderated by Timur Biyachuev, Ph.D., Head of System Software Team at Samsung R&D Institute Russia.

The event will be attended by the representatives of Samsung Research, as well as the companies that sponsor well-known Open Source projects. The conference will open with keynote speeches by Sebastian Seung, President and Head of Samsung Research, Jinguk Jeong, Vice President and General Director of Samsung R&D Institute Russia, Arutyun Avetisyan, Director of Institute for System Programming of RAS, Kevin Xu, Head of International Expansion Strategy at GitHub, Vadim Pisarevski, founder of OpenCV, and Fedor Sedov, a graduate of Samsung IT School and a young developer.

The conference will also include a panel discussion titled «Business and Open Source — frenemies?», in which the moderator of the discussion, famous compiler developer Eugene Zouev, together with experts will discuss competitive advantages and risks, as well as different business models built on Open Source projects. Vyacheslav Garbuzov, Head of System-on-Chip Software Team at Samsung R&D Institute Russia, Alexey Milovidov, Head of the ClickHouse Development Team at Yandex, Roman Alyautdin, Head of OS and Services Development Department at Open Mobile Platform, and Alexey Smirnov, Chairman of the Board of Directors at BaseAlt, will participate in the discussion.

The session part of the conference will feature 17 speeches covering a wide range of Open Source software development: from successful business models and technical topics to legal aspects. Olga Perepelkina of Intel Russia will speak about the OpenFL project, which allows to build Neural Networks models for Federated Learning. Taras Ivaschenko of OZON will talk about the work of Russian branch at OWASP — open international web applications security project. Dina Safina of Mail.Ru Group will speak on the importance of creating local Open Source communities by the example of Russian project Apache Airflow. Artyom Keydunov will use the example of Data Intelligence platform based on Open Source code, developed by his Cube Dev startup, to explain how to make an Open Source project commercially successful and attractive for investors. Nadezhda Kaschenko, CEO and patent attorney of ESPE Legal Consultancy, will talk about the features of Copyleft and Copyright licenses and about the freedoms and rights, which every developer should keep in mind.

Also, the conference will announce the winners of the Community of Open Source Newcomers (COMMoN) online study tracks, an educational program that ran during the conference from Aug. 16 to Sept. 10, for aspiring Open Source software developers.

The Samsung R&D Institute Russia was opened in Moscow in 1993 and now employs over 300 highly qualified specialists. The Center is recognized for its extensive scientific and engineering expertise, which helps to successfully integrate advanced technologies into Samsung devices. The Center runs internship programs for students. The specialists of Samsung R&D Institute Russia have developed educational programs of social projects «Samsung IT School», «Samsung IT Academy», as well as open online courses on Artificial Intelligence on the Stepik platform.
