Samsung has summed up the results of the compiler development course for young professionals

Moscow, October 24, 2019 – Samsung Research Russia has summed up the results of the free Samsung Compiler Bootcamp educational program. The classes were held from September 30 to October 18, 2019. Samsung Compiler Bootcamp was taught by experienced developers and experts working at Samsung R&D Institute Russia in Moscow and Innopolis University.

The Samsung Compiler Bootcamp program was attended by senior students and graduates of leading Russian universities, including MSTU, Moscow State University, Higher School of Economics, MEPhI, MISiS, RTU MIREA. Out of over 100 people who applied for the program, 16 young specialists were selected by the results of an online test in C++ programming.

For three weeks, the participants of the program learned about all the practical aspects of creating compilers, from lexical analysis to optimization and generation of target code. In addition, the lectures addressed issues related to the architecture of modern compilation and interpretation systems, including the concept of a virtual machine, as well as the architecture of runtime support.

The Samsung Compiler Bootcamp course was developed and conducted by professional compiler developers: Evgeny Zuev, Ph.D., developer of the first domestic ISO-compatible C++ compiler, currently a professor at Innopolis University; Dmitry Bocharnikov and Sergey Ignatov, leading developers of the compilers department of Samsung Research Russia with extensive experience in creating compilers for C/C++, .NET for Tizen, NPU and DSP compiler.

The training program included nine theoretical lectures and practical seminars. The students, as part of 4 teams, developed compilers for one full programming language — dynamic, functional, object-oriented or imperative — and, upon completion of the course, presented their projects. The best project was judged to be the one, shown by the developers of a dynamic language compiler. All the graduates of the course got the opportunity to undergo a technical interview for a position in the compiler development team at the Samsung Research Russia.

“Samsung is actively developing its portfolio of Research Centers and Artificial Intelligence Centers around the world, including Russia. In addition to scientific work, the Samsung research unit is actively engaged in educational initiatives. Such programs as the Samsung Compiler Bootcamp also help the company find talented young professionals and develop the research community as a whole,” commented Jin Wook Lee, CEO of Samsung Research Russia.

Samsung Research Russia implements a flourish of educational initiatives in Russia, including the annual Samsung AI Bootcamp summer school on machine learning, the NLP & Deep Learning course at Moscow State University and the free online courses “Neural Networks and Computer Vision” and “Neural Networks in Natural Language Processing” on the Stepik.org educational platform. Together with Samsung Electronics headquarters in the CIS countries, Samsung Research Russia is developing the federal social and educational programs “SAMSUNG IT SCHOOL” (since 2014) and “Samsung IT Academy” (since 2017). In 2019, thousands of students and schoolchildren in 40 Russian cities got the opportunity to study some of the most required and high-end IT subjects for free. Successful experience in implementing programs is replicated in the CIS countries.
